Victoria Chillington-Bourbon had her nose so far up in the air, she had no idea what was on the ground beneath her. She'd been that way since she was a child.

On one hand she had good reason. Her ancestor, Chillington, commanded one of William the Conqueror's ships in 1066. The paperwork to prove it sat in a family vault in the Bank of England. And of course, the Bourbons were French royalty. The family had always been Chillington-Bourbon.

At boarding school, she made sure her teachers and her classmates addressed her as Miss Victoria Chillington Hyphen Bourbon. Behind her back they called her Hyphen and laughed at her pretensions. Many of them claimed royal blood, too.

She wanted nothing to do with anything physical. At school she refused to take part in any physical activity; did not attend the cotillions, where she might have to touch a boy while they danced and refused to attend her Human Biology class.

The exception was her equestrian class. She loved to ride. She had her own horse, but had no interest in brushing him after a hard ride. That's what grooms were for.
