On June 12th, Kenji Nakamura awoke alone in a stark white hospital room. His mind struggled for a moment to comprehend his surroundings; polished white floor, white curtains, white walls, white sheets and even a white handle on the door. As he closed his eyes and yawned, he heard the click of the door handle. An attractive nurse of Chinese heritage walked in to greet him. "Good morning Mr Nakamura, good to see you're awake. I am Nurse Shen Li Xiang, the medical specialist of your team."
"Team?"
"How much do you remember before going into cryo stasis?"
"I was shooting a few scenes in Perth, then I caught a bad flu. All I remember is passing out in my hospital bed. Can you tell me what happened?"
"You are right about the ‘bad flu.' Its nickname is the Black Widow virus, and it has killed 99.99% of all males globally. For reasons we weren't able to determine, it specifically attacks 3 genes on the X chromosome. A few rare males such as yourself have very strong resistance in those genes. To be on the safe side, we put all the surviving males in cryo stasis."
"How long have I been under?"
"The date is the 12th of June, 2030."
"7 years?! Why so long?"
"We were working on a vaccine, but none of what we did worked. I am so sorry we had to do that, but it was necessary for the future of humanity."
"Can I borrow a phone? I want to call my family if that's possible."
"You'll also have to forgive us for prying into your personal life as well. We contacted your mother a few days ago, and she's flying in from Hokkaido. She should be here by tomorrow morning."
"I guess you need me as a sperm donor."
"About that. The Black Widow virus has rendered IVF useless. Believe me, we tried that with embryos already in storage. Apparently IVF doesn't work on anyone exposed to the virus. To get pregnant, a woman will have to do it the old fashioned way. Yes that means you are now effectively a ‘stud bull' for the sake of survival of humanity."
"You mentioned that you are part of a team. Can you explain that to me?"
"You have Team S.T.A.R. Me, Taeko your personal trainer, Ang your psychologist and Rei, your personal assistant. We'll be helping you in the process of, if you'll excuse the expression, sowing your wild oats."
Kenji was a martial arts master who'd been in more fight scenes than he could remember. While he had impeccable manners, humility and warmth, everyone knew him and his work. Cast and crew described him as a pleasure to work with. He treated everyone from the cleaner to the director with the same respect. As a result, the public loved him, and he had more than his fair share of female attention already.
"When you're ready, I'll take you to the bathroom so you can have a shower and freshen up," suggested Shen, "would you like something to eat after that?"
"A good chicken and salad roll would be good. Lettuce, tomato, capsicum, cucumber and some cheddar cheese if it's not too much trouble."
"Not at all. Follow me for your shower." Shen led him to a bathroom that had some kind of lab inside the room. "There is something I need from you though, a sperm sample. I need to check that they're viable. If you need help in that regard, I don't mind."
