Not her real name but correct letter for her first name and the real surname is a herb.

I think it was 1999, I had been asked to join, on bass, a long established Midlands (UK) rock band called Izzy The Push (real name). We'd rehearsed for three of four hours total and a gig came up in Redditch. My predecessor, a woman called Andrea had been taught to play bass from scratch by the guitarist, Jake. He'd taught her the lines he wanted her to play and nothing else so there was never any danger of her going off piste.

I was a very different kettle of fish, with a very flash electric blue Music Man Stingray bass which had so much SUB (deep frequencies) it had demolished more than one set of speaker cones. To this end it was called BUFFY: Buffy the amplifier slayer. I was also packing about five times the wattage that Andrea used, so fading into the background wasn't going to happen. I dressed in designer jeans and t shirt, quite flashy and very much the antithesis of the faded old tour t shirts of the guitarist and drummer.

We were set up at this pub in Redditch, the Queen's Head, opposite the police station, its now boarded up. The singer, Bob, was - as it turns out always was - prior to a gig, having some sort of ROW with his wife on the mobile.

The pissed up manager/owner Pete (RIP) was the only person in the room until this VISION walked in: Suzy Sage.

Suzy stood there at the bar. She was not anyone's idea of a rock chick, dressed as she was, in expensive Jaeger brand and the like - earth tones; with a flowing chiffon scarf. If she'd had a big hat on then she might have been off to the races. Seamed stockings (one assumed...hoped!). Very long chestnut brown hair, and a quietly dignified eminently beautiful, STRONG face. Big brown eyes, immaculate make up. WOW! What A MILF !!!

I was introduced from the stage by the drummer: "Suzy, this is Derek the new bass player, Derek this is Suzy, she comes to nearly all of our gigs, she's our biggest fan"

I said hello, she smiled back and nodded.

Jake started up playing Hendrix's Purple Haze on guitar, not a number we'd rehearsed, I don't believe I'd ever played it but I had the record which was backed up into my brain ready to go.

Jake went through the opening licks and hit the open E chord so into the main part of the song and the thunderous entry of the bass. Bob was still rowing, so I went to his mike and sang it.

Suzy Sage was wide eyed and mesmerised.

Bob re appeared, now off his phone. Either he'd hung up, or Mrs Bob had.

There was an hour or so to kill before we were due to play the gig. Suzy was consuming pints of a very strong bitter at quite a rate! I had a brief conversation with her, I established that she was married, had kids, was a French teacher and that she'd been following Izzy for some years.

I left it at that, I didn't DO married women - FAR too complicated!

So.... I left it for a bit.

I left it for some months, in fact.

At the gigs, she was getting friendlier and friendlier, especially after imbibing a gallon or so (true) of Abbot's Ale or Timothy Taylor's Landlord Bitter. The other band members intimated that, although she was still married, she was far from happy with her husband.
