I yawned as I stirred from a good night's sleep. My eyes opened slowly; after which, I smiled at my husband.

"Thanks," I said in gratitude.

Ever thoughtful through three years of marriage, he'd placed a mug of coffee on my bedside cabinet.

"So?" he asked.

It was his birthday. His 27th. I decided to be playful.

"You do know what day it is?" he prompted.

Bruce looked at me non-plus.

"Yes. Of course. It's your birthday," I giggled.

"Whew! For a second there..." he said, relief painted on his furrowed brow.

"Don't worry. I didn't forget," I said assuringly before taking a sip of coffee.

"Card! You did get one?"

I reached for the draw of the cabinet and took out a red envelope, which I handed to him. I then watched as Bruce drew the flap open, there being little point in sealing it, and took out the card.

He smiled as he read the cover and message inside, saying, afterwards, "I'll hold you to that," before leaning in and giving me a quick kiss.

Ideally, he, we both wanted more. My husband, though, owned the company and so it would be put on hold; not for long, though, as I had a surprise in store for him.

"What time will you be home?" I asked, leading him to believe he wouldn't get his present until later, much later.

"The usual," he answered, before making his way to the bedroom door; whereupon, he turned and blew me a kiss, which I caught.

"Until then," I wished him well and watched as he left for the office.

Even before I heard the sound of the front door being closed behind him, my head was full of what I had planned for the morning as I took another sip of my coffee, the perfect wake-me-up libation.

After breakfast, I returned to the bedroom where I took out the clothes I'd decided to wear and then went and took a quick shower.
