STOCKINGS:
The screening process was always the same.
Pass through the metal detector.
Present your ID to the officer at the front desk.
Officer verifies your identity.
The officer today was an unhappy, grizzled looking man. He gave off the appearance of someone who has been on the job for too long. He scanned the ID into the system.
The ID read "Christian Chen", but that was not his name. The picture was his, albeit with a different hairstyle, glasses, some facial hair and a fake nose. He wore loose fitted clothes and tried to avoid eye contact. All to cover his true identity.
His real name - Bryan Heels. While the last name didn't sound Asian, he was unmistakably one hundred percent Asian. The story goes, he and his sister were given up by their biological parents. An Australian couple adopted them both and in return, Bryan and his sister took on their adopted surname of -- Heels.
Bryan's job was as an investigative reporter and photographer. Some knew the name. Some knew the face. Those that did wanted to do him harm for some of his past work. He spent a lot of time in foreign countries. Bringing down leaders and politicians. Exposing corruption at the highest levels. And most recently, bringing those responsible for racial and sexual injustice to light so that they pay for their crimes. He had many enemies and a few allies. Hence the reason why he had to assume different identities.
Bryan passed the identity check without a second glance. He was ushered into a locker room where he left his belongings that he was not allowed to bring in the visiting room for security reasons.
Then it was time to wait.
The inmate he was waiting to see was an inside source of his. Someone he hoped could fill in the missing pieces on his next huge story. The inmate's name was Jacksom Tam. A small-time criminal who had a knack for getting caught every other time. One who ran in and out of the system so often, nobody noticed. But one who also could be easily swayed by money or other favors.
Forty-three minutes later the inmate's name was called.
"Tam", a gruff voice barked out from one of the officers.
This was Bryan's cue to stand up and go through the next metal detector. Another correction officer was waiting to wand and pat him down.
"Okay, you're good." the officer replied with no emotion and a head nod in the direction of the waiting room.
Bryan walked down to the visitors' room and found an empty space. He sat there and waited some more.
Finally, the inmates were released into the visitors' room.
Jackson made eye contact with Bryan and shuffled over to him as they sat across from one another. A double pane of glass separating them.
Bryan looked around to make sure nobody was eavesdropping on his conversation and then spoke in a hushed tone, "What have you found so far?"
Jackson laughed, "Why the fuck are you whispering Bryan?"
Bryan snapped, "Cut that shit out. It's Christian."
"Whatever man. You gonna get me out this fucking place?" Jackson snapped back.
