It was the week before Christmas and Laura had planned this extravagant Christmas celebration for the community. This was the big holiday event for the season. It was to show that the large media and social network company she worked for cared about the people (which it did not). But as head of Public Relations for the firm, it was her job to generate good press and spin the narrative.
Some good press was much needed now. Over the past year, Laura's company had become the primary target for the government. They were blamed for the lies and misinformation spread throughout the country. So this event would hopefully overshadow some of the bad press.
With inflation and recession, this time of year hit hardest for all the under-served areas in the city. The largely minority communities. So what better than a massive Christmas celebration.
Laura had planned the event to the smallest detail. There would be musical performances, catered free food (and more food to be delivered to homes), toys, giveaways...and of course...SANTA!

Less than two hours before the start of the event she received a call.
"Sorry, but the guy can't make it today. He's sick. We apologize for the late notice." said the voice calmly over the phone.
"OK. So send somebody else." replied Laura, trying to hide her annoyance.
"Unfortunately, we don't have a backup available. It's a busy time of the year and we're understaffed and fully booked." the voice continued calmly yet apologetically.
"What the fuck do you mean?" Laura barked no longer hiding her annoyance.
"We're truly sorry. We can reschedule to another day. Free of charge."
"I can't just reschedule. Our company planned the whole day around Santa coming. We have kids busing over as we speak."
The voice on the other end of the phone continued to apologize profusely and offer alternative options. Laura barely listened as she sat back and tried to calm herself.
"Fuck" Laura mouthed to herself.
Her mind raced through different scenarios. She steadied herself and told herself. This is what they pay me the big bucks for.

Laura was new to the company. They hired her for her expertise as a corporate fixer and public relations guru. For the impressive title and the boatloads of money they paid her, she was content to deal with the mess.
She was by far the youngest of all the executives. Loved by the male co-workers (especially the older white men) and hated by all the women who felt she didn't deserve her place. That's because besides her brilliant mind and cutthroat tactics, she had super model looks and was always dressed to impress.
Always the center of attention, the men and women all stared at her. She had a body that made men cum in their pants just at the sight of her.
She was aggressive, didn't take shit from anyone, and made more enemies than friends. She could charm and flirt when needed. Knew how to play the game to get what she wanted. And was not afraid to step on toes.
So just by being hired, she ruffled a ton of feathers in that exec suite. And her enemies were waiting for her to fuck up.
