Part TwoIn the days that followed that evening spent with Ryan and Jana, I don't want to say I avoided them, but if I'm being honest I can understand how it might have seemed that way. When one or both of them would text I'd be distant. I wasn't being very conversational.
Ryan seemed to give me my space, but Jana was a bit more persistent. Eventually I just broke down and agreed to meet them one evening for dinner. The three of us got along just fine, but things were definitely different, understandably. We talked things through, both assuring me that if it was a one time thing for me that was fine. They weren't going to push for anything further.
Truthfully, I didn't know my answer. I knew the excitement I'd feel when I imagined spending another evening with Jana. At the same time, the experience with Ryan also excited me. It's funny, because I think I scratched an itch I didn't even know existed.
In the days and weeks following that evening I didn't find myself looking at men any different. I mean, I knew I was pretty straight, but I also felt something a little different with Ryan. It's just that I'd grown so close to them in the few months living in their small town. Honestly, I didn't have many friends there aside from them.
Anyway, dinner was wonderful. After the initial awkwardness, probably perpetuated mostly by me, the three of us seemed to get back to ourselves. We had a few drinks and even shot a few games of pool. Jana suggested a nightcap at my place, but I politely declined. I just told them I needed more time to process things.
What I loved about them is that they didn't persist or try to change my mind. I gave Jana a nice, long hug out by the car and shook Ryan's hand. The three of us went our separate ways that evening.
As the next few weeks played out things got back to normal. I was nearing the end of my work project and within a month would be heading back home. I worked out almost daily at their club, oftentimes with one, or both, of them. While the thought of being with them again wasn't out of my mind, per se, they never pushed or said anything about it.
About a week before I was ready to wrap up my work project, I received a text from Jana asking if I wanted to meet them out for a drink. This wasn't uncommon. My first thought was that I shouldn't. It was a Thursday night and I knew I had a long Friday in front of me. After hemming and hawing, I agreed.
We had a few drinks, ordered some apps, even played a little pool and threw some darts. Everything was normal. Then Jana told me about a mini-trip the two of them were taking the next day. Earlier in the week had been their 15-year wedding anniversary. Because of running a busy and successful business combined with being parents to very active kids, there wasn't a destination trip in the cards.
They had rented what is called a tiny home for two nights out in the country a few hours away. This home was in the woods, private and with a lot of amenities. It had a hot tub, a sauna, outdoor shower, fire pits and more. Sounded like the perfect getaway to me.
"I know you have to work tomorrow and are trying to wrap things up by next week so you can head home for good, but would you be interested in joining us for a night at the tiny home?" Jana asked. "It's only about 90 minutes away, and I know we're kind of springing this on you at the last minute, but we'd love it if you would," she said playfully, running her hand along my arm.
You have to remember, that evening the three of us spent together was almost a full month ago. While it took a little time for that awkwardness to wear off, we hadn't really spoken much of it.
"If you don't want to, just tell us." Ryan said, sensing my surprisement at Jana's request. "We just thought that since this is your last weekend here and we'll be gone, it would be fun to see you and hang out again before you need to leave."
