Ulysses Rexham came to Boston once a week to talk to his accountant. He was in his mid-forties.It was there that he met Mrs. Wilhemina Fairchild who always had lunch with friends at the Fairmont Hotel; a joint venture between the Fairchild's and the Montague family. She was the wife of William Fairchild of the Beacon Hill Fairchilds.
She knew the Rexhams by reputation. Their money, not the Rexham men's reputations. When she introduced herself, he knew the Fairchilds but had never been introduced to any members of the family.
It was true that Mrs. Fairchild wasn't looking to having an affair. It was also true that she was in a loveless marriage. When she married William Fairchild he was approaching fifty; had a business to run or should I say businesses. He came to an arrangement with his partner, J. Marquard Montague to marry his stunning twenty-year-old daughter, Wilhemina.
The first year of their marriage had been magical. William was an attentive lover; with his experience, he made sure that when he was finished she was well-satisfied. But that was almost ten years ago.
Since then, he neglected her 360 days a year. Her birthday, their anniversary, his birthday, New Year's Eve and Christmas, he indicated his interest; the rest of the year nothing.
Ulysses Rexham was intrigued by the lovely thirty-year-old Mrs. Fairchild who kept herself in excellent shape, hoping it would attract her husband's attention. Like I said, it didn't. She was a tall, statuesque woman, blonde who was always dressed fashionably. Ulysses had flowers sent to her anonymously, but he was certain she knew who they were from.
The following week, he saw her in the Fairmont dining room. "Mr. Rexham, thank you, the flowers were lovely."
"You're welcome, Mrs. Fairchild. Lovely flowers for a lovely woman."
There were more flowers the following week.
When she saw him the next time, "Mr. Rexham, how can I ever thank you?"
"Mrs. Fairchild, I live in Duxbury, but I keep a home here in town. Could I interest you in thank me in private?"
The Rexham men were known for their bluntness.
"Mr. Rexham, I'm a married woman."
He slipped his calling card into her hand; she didn't reject it.
The following week when she saw him, she whispered, "my carriage will stop momentarily at your home in two hours; I hope your invitation still stands." She smiled.
"I'll be waiting anxiously."
Her carriage arrived and stopped for less than a minute while a woman with a cape over her head exited and quickly climbed the steps. Ulysses opened the door for her before she had a chance to knock.
"Thank you, Mr. Rexham. That was very kind of you. Of course, I can't be seen coming here."
"I'm glad you decided to come. May I offer you a glass of wine?"
Wilhemina Fairchild walked around. "No thank you. Your home is very beautiful." She found what she was looking for. "Ah, I suspect this is the room you wanted me to see. Are you going to join me, Mr. Rexham?" It was his bedroom.
She didn't hesitate to undress and was in bed before Ulysses. "Mr. Rexham, you seem to be a man of some experience in the romantic arts. Perhaps, you can help me."
