"This is such a crap!" Matt exclaimed.
"What's up?" asked Emily, one of the managers reporting to him, who was passing his office.
I am reviewing the memo on our new strategic goals and the planned restructuring. This has significant implications for our business line. We are expected to close one of our factories and lay off 300 workers. The memo states that the factory did not turn a profit due to low output," he explained.
"One of the other business line heads called it the HARC report," Matt continued.
Emily looked at him with an empty expression. "What is 'HARC'?" she asked.
"Hard ass Rachel Carlow," he replied. Rachel Carlow was the new CFO - chief financial officer. She had only recently been hired and was the company's new big shot.
Matt said, "There are rumors that she also carried out a major restructuring plan at the company where she used to work."
"You mean she has not been hired for her great looks," Emily teased. She had only seen a picture of Rachel in the internal announcement when she joined the company. Emily remembered that Rachel was a stunning redhead with bright green eyes.
No, I don't think so. At the last meeting of the business line heads, she laid out her plans for significant cost reductions. And she seemed like she wouldn't budge even if you presented strong arguments against her plan. In my opinion, she knows nothing about our industry. She only knows the numbers in her spreadsheets and thinks she can tell us how to run the business," Matt fumed.
"I must admit that I did not focus on whether she was beautiful or ugly. I am not interested in dating her," Matt said.
"Matt Harper is not interested in a stunning redhead. That is hard to believe," Emily teased him.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Matt chuckled.
Emily and Matt had known each other since high school, when they had briefly dated. Therefore, she took the liberty of making such a comment, and Matt was grateful for the distraction.
"Not everyone is lucky enough to find a great partner like you have with Mitch," Matt said.
"That is true. I am very happy with him. But you will also find someone who makes you happy," Emily assured him.
"I am not sure about that. My latest attempts haven't been very successful," Matt said.
"Anyway, back to business. We need to come up with a counterproposal to this mess. I need you to help me gather some numbers to prove that we don't need to close the factory," Matt told her.
"Sure, I will start right away. When do you need the numbers? Keep in mind that we have our off-site event later this week," Emily reminded him.
"Ah, I had nearly forgotten that it's this week. This stupid team-building event that no one needs," Matt complained.
"Don't be such a spoilsport. It will be fun," Emily retorted.
"If you say so," Matt replied.
"I would like to talk to Rachel before we go to this off-site event. Do you think you can give me at least the factory output numbers by tomorrow evening?" Matt asked.
