Lisa and Terry Claremont were cautiously curious as they entered The Spicy Onion, an eatery near Spotsylvania Mall. The couple stopped for gas after shopping at the mall and asked someone where they could get a good bite to eat nearby. The Spicy Onion was the recommendation.
The couple was seated and they looked over the menu.
"This all looks good. I think the theme is Spicy Americana," Lisa said.
"Doesn't bode well for you," her husband said. "You don't like Spicy food."
"Not terribly hot. But if it tastes good, I'll eat it," Lisa said.
Terry's brow furled. "The Hades Burger," he mused. "Interesting."
"Hey there," a voice said. They looked up from their menus and saw a smiling, older White woman with an iPad mini in her hand. "I'm Sandy and I'll be serving you today. What can I get you to drink?" she asked.
"Thank you, Sandy. We will both have sweet tea. Do you have a recommendation for us? This is our first time here," Terry said.
"Well, are you a fan of spicy food?" Sandy asked.
"I am. Her, not so much," Terry said.
"It depends," Lisa corrected with a smile. "I can handle a little spice if it tastes good."
Sandy crossed her arms and rested her chin in one hand in thought. "For you, I think you'd like our Firecracker Shrimp. It's sweet and a little spicy. It's served with a cool cucumber ranch dipping sauce, fries, and coleslaw," she said, nodding to Lisa.
"Goody. Let's do that. I trust you," Lisa said with a smile.
"What's up with this Hades Burger?" Terry asked.
Sandy looked at the attractive Black couple and smiled. She had been working at the restaurant for almost a year and was dying for someone to ask the question. There was a rumor surrounding the story. She looked around quickly and then sat down beside Terry. She eyed them cautiously.
"A question," she said to the confused couple. "Are you shy or prudish? I don't believe you are but I have to ask," she said.
Terry and Lisa looked at each other and shrugged. "We're big kids. We can take it," Lisa said.
Sandy smiled. "Okay, because there's a story behind the burger if you want to hear it," she said.
Terry grinned. "Must be a good story," he said.
"Oh, you don't know the half of it," Sandy said.
Now Lisa was curious. "Well, he wants this Hades burger, well done please, and with whatever way it's served. Put in our order, then you can tell us the story," she said.
Sandy did something on her iPad and showed it to Terry. "You have to sign a waiver," she said.
"Oh damn," Terry exclaimed, taking the iPad and signing the waiver with his finger. He handed it back to Sandy and she put in their order. Afterward, she put down the iPad and grinned.
"Okay, it all began last year during the spring," she began.
