This takes a while to get started, but be patient. And, be sure to read the epilogue. My first sales job was with a legal publishing company selling research databases and books to smaller law firms. It was a big change from being a lawyer but I had burned out and needed something different. My territory covered northern Puget Sound, the San Juans, and the Olympic Peninsula, which made for a lot of scenic windshield time driving to visit customers.
The first January my manager asked if I wanted to work a state bar convention for small law firms in Chelan, a resort town on the other side of the Cascades. It was scheduled for two and a half days, there would be a booth to staff, and I was assured that I could sell a couple months quota in that time. No one else on the team wanted to travel in the winter, but I had nothing special that week and decided to hit Stevens Pass for skiing on the way over and back. My manager told me she was going too.
And therein lies the story. Sherry was a beautiful Filipina. Petite, barely five feet tall. Dark, almond shaped eyes. Darker skin from a mixed heritage of Spanish, native Filipino and who knows what else. Thick, dark brown hair, usually worn back and falling to her shoulder blades. She wasn't too curvy with smallish b cup breasts and fairly thin hips.
Sherry was smoking hot but didn't really know it. All of the male reps at our sales kickoff did their best to hit on her, but as she was my boss I took a hard stand and did my lawyerly professional best to keep it all business. In any event, we were both married. Sherry had two smaller kids (she was about 36 at the time, just a couple of years younger than I was), and didn't seem like the type to stray. She was also devoutly Catholic and dressed very conservatively. Her dresses were always below the knee, and she never showed any cleavage.
Sherry told me that we would take her car to save costs, which killed my plans to ski. I was still new and didn't object. The exhibition hall opened at noon, so Sherry swung by my West Seattle house at 8. She pulled up in a Honda minivan, which was all the rage for young families back then. Sherry seemed impressed with the house, though she didn't come in or see what I had parked in the garage. My wife was at work. After putting my bag in the back, I was about to go to the passenger side when she handed me the keys and told me that I would be driving.
We talked mainly about work as I drove over Snoqualmie Pass to Cle Elum, then the back way over Blewett Pass to US 2. From there it was an easy drive down the Wenatchee River valley and up to Chelan. It was January but the roads were good. The convention was at Campbell's Resort in downtown Chelan, a classic 1950s style hotel on the lake. Campbell's has several additions as it grew over time. Our rooms were in the newer section and didn't face the lake. It took about 30 minutes to set up the booth, primarily figuring out the expandable backdrop.
The first day and a half of the seminar were unremarkable. I did indeed sell enough books and research licenses to retire two months of my quota. Sherry helped as needed but spent a lot of time on the phone with the rest of her team. We had dinner together both nights in local restaurants down the street from Campbells, all very professional.
When we went down on the third morning the hall was strangely quiet. All but one of the other exhibitors had packed up and left, and the remaining one was packing. Sherry asked me to go find out what was going on while she checked her email. The exhibitor said that a storm was coming in and that most of the lawyers at the convention were checking out early this morning to beat it. I went over to the lobby, where I learned that the Cascade passes were probably going to close that evening as the storm was already over the coast.
Because we were planning to drive home later in the afternoon anyway, we had our suitcases with us. Our plan was to check out at the morning break, hence we missed the scene in the lobby. I related the situation to Sherry. She agreed that we should head back, so we packed up. A couple of the remaining convention goers came by and wanted a demo of our research software, which I gave and then closed a nice deal. And while I appreciated several thousand dollars of commission, this
