Revelations

The air smelled of fresh coffee and citrus from the dish soap. As she had the habit of doing, Sadie slipped in through the back door of the Morales house for an 8am study session. Her sneakers squeaked on the mat. Her backpack hung from one shoulder, weighed down with textbooks and highlighters. For the first time in weeks, she had a rare break for Santiago. She expected things to be the same: Santiago’s shy smile, gentle touches, and the safe distance that let her take what she needed without strings attached.

He stood at the counter, back to her, slowly pouring hot water over a Chemex filter. His hair is still wet from post early morning rowing training. His faded grey sweatpants sat low on his hips, the drawstring loose. His white T-shirt had ridden up, showing the dimples at the base of his spine. The shirt hugged his shoulders and chest, muscles shaped by time on the water and in the gym. His dark hair, still damp from a shower, curled at his neck. The room carried the scent of his soap, fresh cedar, and salt, mingled with coffee.

Sadie’s perceptive eyes noticed right away: his body moved differently. His shoulders weren’t tense. He didn’t hunch to make himself look smaller. Instead, he moved with a relaxed, almost lazy grace. He reached for mugs without rushing, muscles shifting smoothly under his skin. The usual tension in his jaw was gone. When he turned at her, his face was calm, eyes open and clear. The tension she’d always sensed under his polite surface was gone. Now, he seemed completely at ease, radiating a quiet strength that made her stomach twist in a way she couldn’t name.

"Hey, stranger," she said as she perched on the granite counter. Her legs dangled, and her feet swung. She pushed her wire-rimmed glasses up with one finger and flashed a bright, easy smile. Confidence thrummed through her; she held the reins here. Santiago was her sweet, devoted giant friend with benefits. Always waiting and accommodating her brutal schedule. "Wow, Santiago," she teased, tilting her head with mock arrogance. "You look incredibly relaxed. Did Coach finally give the rowing team a day off, or did you go out and get laid?"

She expected the blush, that endearing rush of color, creeping up his neck to his cheeks. She expected him to rub the back of his neck with one large hand, avert those beautiful brown eyes with an embarrassed glance, and stammer a denial while his lips curved into that shy, lopsided grin she found so reassuring. She waited for the familiar pattern of awkwardness and reassurance to snap the dynamic back into place like a well-oiled machine.

Just then Sloane K walked down the stairs freshly showered and dressed in a pink Nike sports bra, black High-waisted leggings and white Nike sneakers as she was pulling a Stanford Rowing staff polo over her head.

She gave Sadie a quick smile and a wave to Santiago as she headed to the front door.

Santiago offered, “Sloane, do you want some coffee?”

Sloane: “No thanks, I have a coaches meeting to get to” she responded as she opened the door.

Santiago: “Alright, I'll be at training at 4.”

Sloane gave an acknowledging hand gesture as she walked out the door, closing it behind her.

Santiago turned back towards Sadie. He didn’t blush, he didn’t look away or seem unsure. The kettle in his hand stayed steady as he set it down with a quiet, deliberate click that broke the silence. Steam rose from the Chemex, but the air between them felt heavier, charged with a new intensity that Sadie sensed was nothing like their usual safe routine.

He planted his large hands on the counter on either side of her thighs, close enough that his forearms brushed her knees, effectively caging her in without touching. The heat radiating from his body was palpable, a wall of warmth that made her skin prickle under her thin leggings and
