Chapter 34 – Jose’s Confession

News of the hate crime shook the community. Local media talked about an all-American kid who was murdered because of his sexual orientation.

Matthew withdrew from everything. All he ever cared about had been mercilessly taken away from him. Hence, he couldn’t eat or sleep and refused to see anyone. This went on for days until an unexpected visitor showed up at his door.

“You’re back ….” said Matthew.

“I’m sorry for your loss.”

"Why? Why did they hurt Alex?”

Jose didn’t have a response.

“He never hurt anyone. He didn't deserve this," continued Matthew.

"No, man, he didn't."

"He was my best friend. I miss him so much …."

Jose felt sorry for the kid, who was sobbing and visibly in pain. There was nothing he could do or say to make Matthew feel better.

"I love him so much."

"I'm sure he knew."

"He told me he liked me. I was stupid to reject him."

Jose was silent for a while. He knew he had wronged Matthew by sleeping with Alex, but it wasn't entirely his fault. Alex wanted it too. And now, sprawled on the bed, was the beauty that he had taken advantage of on countless occasions.

"Matt … there's something I should tell you, but I dunno if this is the right time."

"What is it?"

Jose didn’t know how Matthew would react once he knew the truth.

"I slept with Alex … before your road trip," confessed Jose.

Matthew paused. This non-response put Jose on edge, and made him feel even more self-conscious and in the wrong.

"You lucky bastard. Why didn't you tell me?" said Matthew.

"You're … not upset?"

"Alex mentioned he was seeing someone. He said he wasn’t ready to tell me, but I could tell … he was crazy about you."

"Really?"

"He was my best friend. I’m glad he found someone special. Did you treat him well?"

Jose nodded. He recalled how he drove into Alex, the speed, the depth, the force, how badly Alex wanted him, how badly he wanted Alex. It was the wrong time and place to feel this way, yet he couldn't help it.

Matthew drifted back into silence and Jose kept to himself as well. Each had their own thoughts, their own memories of what kind of person Alex was. His innocence, his smile, his goodness.

“So you were sleeping with him at the same time … you were sleeping with me?”
