It was Saturday, and Fiona got ready to meet Laura that evening, looking forward more than ever to be spending time with her. Because they were meeting outside of a piano lesson, it felt like a real milestone in their relationship, proof that they were now much more than just teacher and student. It felt as though Laura was inviting her into her life, not just her studio.

She walked downstairs, her mother seeing her as she put on her coat. "You look nicely dressed. Where are you going tonight?"

"Nowhere special, " she replied, trying to sound as casual as possible. "I'm meeting a friend and I guess we'll go to a club."

Her mother noticed her carefully applied makeup and that she was wearing a dress she hardly ever wore. "Just a friend?" she asked. "Or a special someone? A boyfriend?"

Fiona felt a little uncomfortable under her mother's knowing gaze, but it was a question she could answer very easily and truthfully. "No, it's not a boyfriend."
