“I’d like that. See you then.”

It was just coffee the next day, two days later and two days after that, and then it wasn’t. “Is there a way to see you in the evening, Sophie?”

“You mean alone and in private?” I’d like that. On Fridays and Saturdays, I go out with my friends. They’ll cover for me. Are you thinking like a hotel room, Colonel?” The way she said it made it seem that was what she was expecting.

“That’s what I was thinking. There’s a very nice hotel near the base you might like. Sophie, is that what you were thinking?”

“I was. I’ve been with boys but never a man,” she squeezed his hand. “Colonel. . .”

“Bart. Please call me Bart.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing a beautiful young woman Friday night,” he smiled.

He met her in the hotel’s café. “Sophie, you look stunning. You’re a gorgeous young woman. I’m lucky to be in your company.”

She blushed. “And Bart, I barely recognized you out of uniform. You look so handsome. Take me to your room; then take me in your arms.” Sophie kissed him on the cheek and took his hand.

Since Lieutenant Colonel Bartholmew Kolakowski was eighteen, he’d chased girls. Because he was so good looking, he frequently caught them. He learned what they liked and didn’t like.

Those girls learned and whispered among themselves that Bart had something special in his pants. One girl, Mayann Machado told her best friend, Olga Baronova, “I call him Black Bart.”

“Why?”
