Indian Summer Part II

Takoda lay beside Sarah in the dim glow of the dying fire. He gently twisted a lock of her hair around his finger, listening to the forest come alive in the pre dawn hours. Birds began their morning songs and small animals scurried beneath the brush, drowning out the soft sounds of her breathing. He was tired but he allowed himself only brief periods of rest while keeping alert for movement through the trees. To be caught off guard would mean death for both of them, especially if Paytah still lurked in the area. Sarah sighed in her sleep and curled herself tightly around him. Takoda smiled and lightly kissed her forehead feeling a happiness that eluded him for such a long time. As though she somehow filled an empty place in his heart that had grown larger on long, lonely nights. The war that threatened to swallow his existence suddenly took a far corner of his mind, if only for a moment.

The first rays of the sun poked through the dense canopy when he carefully untangled himself from her and wandered outside of the cave. He needed to relieve himself before moving her to another place of safety. Takoda didn’t see or hear anything, but his spine stiffened and his muscles tensed before the razor-edge of the arrow scratched into his back. He stood frozen when Paytah’s voice hissed out from behind him.
