Dimitri found himself smiling at the memory of his encounter fifteen months before. He had been sent to inspect the final stages of the road upgrade. No longer was there dust clouding his windscreen. The countryside looked more subtle too. Fresher now on this mild autumn day than last time when it had been the height of a humid, barren summer. In fact, this would be a most pleasant drive in the country. He had been praised for his efficiency in overseeing the road redevelopment and he knew that a promotion with a healthy pay rise was his. Life was indeed kind.

Thump. Chud. Chudda. Chud. Dimitri cursed under his breath as the day suddenly took a turn for the worse. Damn. He pulled over to the side of the road as the car swerved drunkenly out of control on its burst back tyre. His day ruined, Dimitri went to the back of his ute to collect his tools and cursed again. The young trainee they had just appointed would have five minutes to resign and five minutes to run for his life when he returned to the office. Dimitri sighed, remembering a week ago how the trainee had borrowed the jack and spare tyre for his own vehicle, promising to return both the next day.

Dimitri considered his position. He had noticed a house about half a mile back down the road. No cars in sight. His mobile signal was dead this far from a tower. Reluctantly, he locked the ute and trudged in the direction of the house.
