Matthew

I have known Matthew since he was 11 years old and my son brought him home after the first day of school; we had just moved into this neighbourhood and we were still settling in to our new surroundings. Matthew and Jake - my son - quickly became firm friends: riding their bikes to school together, playing soccer for the same club team, joining the same Scout troop. Matthew's parents had divorced some years earlier and he lived with his father, whereas I had always been a single parent. I guess in some ways he thought of me as the mother he was missing. At one stage, both the boys decided that it would be wonderful if Matt's father and I got together, thus saving them the trouble of living in separate households.
