I leaned against my window peering down the block to the Fazio’s house. Mr. Fazio’s car was already gone. Joey stepped out of the front door and jumped in his car, also off to work. An hour later, I looked again. Joey’s sister and brother left with towels over their shoulders, headed for the Mullen’s house for a swim. Then came the signal. Shades pulled up in the living room windows.

The coast was clear.

I stepped into the summer morning sun and ducked through the back yard to the woods behind my house. It was like an adventure trail, meandering through the brush toward the end of the block.
