The season wasn’t as much of a success as the previous one, when Kristin led us to a championship. But the girls all got along well and it was enjoyable. After the playoffs were over, one of the girls parents’ wanted to throw a team party at their house in the Valley. Of course I was invited.

It was a beautiful two-story house set in the woods with a long downhill driveway to a cul-de-sac street. Jo, whose parents owned the house, met me at the mailbox with her usual warm smile and high-pitched chirpy voice.
