The Point

The drive up to the “Point” didn’t take very long. Although it was a winding road, Jeff knew the way. We’d been going to the point with increasing regularity the longer we dated. The bench style front seat let me sit close to him. As the road twisted and turned, I slid tight up against him, feeling the hairs on his leg tickle my bare calves. Jeff’s hand resting on my knee between shifts added to my growing excitement.

The “Point” is the local lover’s lane. All the kids seemed to go there, or at least wish they had someone to go there with. It is an overlook, at the end of the road that looks down on the local lake. In the daytime, it looks a lot like a dirt parking lot, with bits of trash and scraggly grass, but at night, it becomes a secluded place to be alone with your boyfriend or girlfriend. When the moon is out, it reflects on the lake below, and makes it real romantic.

Going to the Point meant that you and whoever you went with were a serious couple. Some weekend nights it got pretty crowded. In the summer, you could hear bits and pieces of the conversations, lovemaking or bickering going on in the other cars. Hearing someone moaning from one car, and someone else saying “no” in another car made for a funny mix of sounds. Jeff and I had been going to the Point ever since the end of school, and as the summer wore on, our sessions had gotten ...
