ESmail private message system

ESmail is EroticStories.com's internal private message system. It is not the same as regular email, because you can not send/receive messages to/from people outside of EroticStories.com. It's just a system for users (readers and writers) on EroticStories.com to communicate.

The advantage of the system is, that it's private, quick and separate from your personal 'regular email'. You also do not have to worry about viruses, spam or messages that sometimes magically disappear because of the spam filters that have to be used for regular email, or email addresses that are out of date and don't work anymore.

Of course there are also disadvantages, mostly because it is just a simple system without any advanced features for formatting for example.

You can attach a file to a message, but only one. Only files of certain types are allowed, and they can not be too big.

Personalities

You will only have more than one personality, if you are an author. For a description of the 'user' and 'author' personalities, see the explanation for 'selecting the sender personality' below.

The ESmail system has two modes:

1) Merged mailboxes (the default). In this case, messages received by and sent from all of your personalities will be shown in one inbox, one sent mail box and one archive mail box. This is convenient, because you have just one inbox to check to see all your messages. The disadvantage is, that you may be a little confused which personality a message was sent to or from.

2) Separate mailboxes. In this case, messages for your different personalities are shown in a separate inbox, archive and sent mail box; one for each personality. You can switch between the personalities using the 'current personality' selection box at the top of the ESmail main page. Sometimes this mode leads to some confusion, when the site flashes saying there is new ESmail, but the user first has to cycle through all the personalities in order to find the one that actually has those new messages.

Which of the site's two modes you use, is something you can configure in your ESmail settings.

Selecting the sender personality ('from' field)

You can only select a sender personality if you are an author, in which case you have two or more personalities:

1) User personality

This is the personality that is connected to your user (login) account. Everybody has this one, whether you are an author or not. If you have more than one personality, you can recognize this one in the sender selection box, because it shows (user) behind the personality name.

Messages sent from this personality will show the name you have entered in your user profile, which can be edited from "settings -> Settings of your public user profile". When the recipient of the message clicks on your name, he/she will be shown that public profile.

2) Author personalities

This is the personality that is connected to your author account(s). If you are an author, you will have one of these for each of your author names. You can recognize this one in the sender selection box, because it shows (author) behind the personality name.

Messages sent from this personality will show the author name (alias) you have entered in the author profile, which can be edited from "author tools -> Author account(s)". (Then click on the name of the author you which to edit the profile for) When the recipient of the message clicks on your name, he/she will be shown the author profile (obviously including all stories).

Selecting the recipient of the message ('to' field)

With this selection box you can select the recipient of the message, if you are creating a new message. In some cases, like when replying to a message, this is already filled in and can not to be edited anymore.

The selection list shows all recipients that are in your addressbook. If you want to send an ESmail to someone, who is not in your addressbook (yet), you can do this in various ways:

1) If you have already received an ESmail from this person, you can simply reply to the message that you received from this person.

2) If you want to send an ESmail to an author, you can go to the author's profile or one of their stories; there are links there to send an ESmail to the author.

3) If you want to send an ESmail to a user, you can go to this user's public profile; there is a link there to send ESmail. The exception are users, who have set their profile to 'invisible'.

The address book

You can add people to your address book in the following ways:

1) When reading an ESmail from someone, who is not yet in your addressbook, a link ('add to addressbook') will show next to the sender's name. Click the link to add the user.

2) When creating an ESmail to someone, who is not yet in your addressbook, there is a checkbox with the text 'add to addressbook' next to the recipient's name. Check the box and the user will be added as soon as you send the message.

3) When checking someone's public user profile, you will see a link that says 'add this user to your ESmail address book'.

Formatting and smileys (may not work for all browsers)

Some simple options have been added that allow you to make your message text appear a little more lively. First of all the standard options <b>bold</b>, <u>underline</u> and <i>italics</i> have been added. Furthermore you can add some icons (smileys) to your text.

In order to use this, surround the text you want to apply an effect to with the HTML tags, as is shown above. So for example, right before the word you want to be printed bold, you add <b>, and just behind the word you add </b>.

You can be aided by the system, by clicking one of the words 'bold', 'italics' or 'underline' just above the textarea where you enter the message text. An opening and closing tag will then be automatically added and you can type your text between those tags.
By far the easiest way, though, is to highlight/select the text you want to make bold, italics or underlined and then click on of the words 'bold', 'italics' or 'underlined'. The correct tags will then be placed around your selected text.

The smileys also have their own special codes in the text. For example, one of the smileys is called 'smile' and the code used within the text to insert that smiley in the message is: . You can easily add the right code within the text, by putting the cursor at the location where you want to enter the smiley, and then clicking the smiley you want to add. The system will then add the correct code to the text.

Previewing the message (may not work for all browsers)

Click the 'preview' button below the text to see what your message would look like to the recipient, with the formatting and smiley codes converted. The formatted message text will be shown below. After you make any changes to the text, simply click the preview button again and the preview will be updated.

Attaching a file

You can attach a file to your message, by clicking the 'browse' button in the 'send file' line when creating a message. Using that button you can select the file you want to attach.

Please note, that the file will actually be sent (uploaded) to the site after you have written the message and clicked the 'send message' button. Because of this, you may have to have some patience after clicking 'send message'. Depending on the size of the file you are attaching and the speed of your connection, it may take several minutes (!) for the site to respond after clicking.

Blocking senders

You can block certain users on the site from sending you ESmail. Whenever a blocked user sends you an ESmail, the message will be silently discarded and you will never see it. The sender will not know he/she is blocked.

In order to add someone to your 'blocked list', click the 'block mail from this sender' link. You will see this link next to the sender's name, when reading a message you received from this person.

You can check your list of blocked senders by clicking the 'blocked senders' link in the ESmail main page. You can also remove senders from your block list on that page.
