As Paul was driving home he was promising himself, for probably the thousandth time, that it wouldn't happen again. He loved Aimee, and he knew she wouldn't keep believing that he was working 20 hours or more a week of unpaid overtime. She certainly wasn't stupid. Just, boring wasn't the word, well known. Too well known. She had been his first lover, and he was pretty sure he was the only lover she had ever had. After 10 years of marriage, he was wanting something more than the standard, missionary position in and out. And he had found that outside the marital bed. But, he still felt guilty.

When he walked into the house, he noticed how still and quiet it was. Nothing moved. There was no music playing, and the smells of dinner were not coming from the kitchen. When he put his keys in their accustomed place on the mantle, he saw the note. An envelope, with the words "Dearest Paul" in Aimee's scrawling handwriting.

This is it, he thought. I knew she would catch on, and now she has. And now she's gone. But, to his amazement, the note read only "Come to the cabin now." She hadn't signed it, but there was no doubt that Aimee had written the cryptic words. He didn't wait to pack a suitcase, call his friend Bob with whom he was supposed to play poker later that night, or even make a sandwich. He simply picked up his keys and headed for the door.

The cabin was their summer place, or had been before a growing law ...
