The Caryatids

Tanya hurried down the aisle, trying to fit the bottle of conditioner into her too-small shopping basket to the tune of Iris, musacked beyond any possibility of angst. Flutes hinted that that everything seemed to be broken, as the plastic bottle struck the floor.

She stopped abruptly, sliding an extra half step, before turning back. She leaned down until the dress stopped her, then with a frustrated chuff, curtseyed, which with the lean was just enough to let her scoop up the bottle. She stood, muttering, discarded the tissue-box to make room for the conditioner, and then started walking again, only to stop at the little jewelry display.

Her hand stole up to touch her bare earlobes, and she breathed something unladylike before running her fingers down the cards of mock jewelry.

"You cannot be serious," said the man standing nearby, attention no doubt attracted by whatever had been falling out of the cocktail dress she was at war with.

"Can I help you, sir?" she asked him, irritably. "Is there some kind of problem?"

"Not unless you actually intend to purchase any of those," he responded, ...
