Mr Swartz

This is a story of fiction but as with most of my writings, there is a thread of reality in it.

Mr Swartz came to the house at about 8:30. The kids had left for school and Jim, my husband was out looking for work. Jim has been unemployed since June, when the plant closed down. The rent was due 5 days ago and we just didn’t have the money. Now I would have to explain to the landlord that he would have to wait until Jim’s benefits came in and who knew how long that would be?

I opened the door for Mr Swartz to come in and held my old housecoat tight against the cold.. “Mary, do you have the cheque?” he asked. He knew what the answer would be. “Jim hasn’t gotten anything yet. It should be in anytime now. A couple of days maybe.” Mr Swartz took off his coat and laid it over the chair in the hallway. “That doesn’t do me any good now, does it?” he answered as he strolled down the hall. “I’d better have a look at that leak in the ceiling while I’m here” Without waiting for a reply, he walked into our bedroom to examine a leak that we had been complaining about for ages. I stood at the doorway as he leaned up against our dresser, gazing at our ceiling. Finally, he fixed his stare on me and said that we were almost a week ...
