I had gotten the news earlier today and it was just starting to sink in. My brother was in jail. He had been caught in possession of a controlled substance and was serving time at the city jail in the next town over. He and I are roommates, and both of us depend on each other to pay half the rent and utilities. The bail was insanely high, and worse yet, I knew he was innocent. My best guess was that someone had ditched a bag of [censored] in the back of his convertible and pinned it on him so they could get away.

I was sitting there, staring at the TV, not really watching what was on, and wondering what the fuck I was going to do. Sure, I could pay the rent by myself, but I wouldn't have enough money for groceries. On this drug charge, his bank account had been frozen, so there was no way to get money from him. I didn't want to borrow from anyone. This just sucked. The bail was more than I could afford with two months pay at my job.

The phone rang, and I let the machine pick it up since caller ID said it was an unknown number. The person calling sounded vaguely familiar but I really couldn't put a name or face to the voice.
