Debbie had had enough. She had just turned 18, wasn't doing well in school, and her boyfriend had recently enlisted in the Army and was now somewhere in Georgia training. Debbie's mom and dad were always off on business trips. So Debbie decided to take off and try to make it on her own. Some other city would no doubt be full of opportunities, but she knew her parents would never agree to her quitting school. The only logical thing to do was to "run away." She would do it the next time her parents went out of town at the same time.

Her big chance came soon. Both parents were going away, and her mom would be gone for at least 3 days. Debbie withdrew the money she had in her bank account and packed her rolling overnight bag. She would have to do with taking a minimal amount of clothing, but if she found a job and stayed at youth hostels for a while, she figured she could eventually make it.

The only problem was transportation. She couldn't take either of her parents cars, as that would leave a trail for the police to find her. She knew that when her parents came home and found her and a car missing, they would surely call the police. She would have to hitchhike.

Debbie told her parents that her Science club was going to the Natural History Museum 200 miles away over the weekend, giving her two extra days headstart. As her dad drove her to the bus station, she insisted ...
