The idea for this story came from an e-mail story comment by a man who described himself as a senior, bi male. He likes stories about older folks. Here it is.

Howard sat behind his tiny desk in his crowded office and thought about the last two years. The early layoff package from the plant where he had worked for twenty years had provided enough money for him and Gloria. The kids were grown and on their own and presented no financial burden. They had been happy and carefree, within limits, and had done some of the things that they could not afford when the kids were there. Then it happened. Gloria had the stroke. It was a severe one and she died on the way to the hospital. He had moped around the house for six months before realizing that he had to get on with life and that would be difficult if he remained in the house they had shared long enough to have it paid for.

It took a while for the house to sell but finally he had to move out. Not only did he leave the house; he left the state. He had not wanted to go to Florida and become a ‘Snowbird”, so he chose a rural setting ...
