Darius & the Silver Swan

Chapter 1

It was afternoon when Shae's horse finally plodded into Upper Gralin's Town. She wouldn't have long to get ready before going up to the castle. She needed to present herself to the duke fairly early if she had any hope of performing in his hall that evening. She checked in at the local bathhouse and sent her travelling clothes off to be laundered while she bathed. She disdained the offer of an attendant at her bath; it was a needless expense, and she just wasn't that kind of girl, despite what people said about bards. While she bathed, Shae wondered what kind of man this Duke Darius was. She had heard all sorts of rumours, but she knew better than anyone not to put too much faith in what she heard; tales were her profession. Confusingly though, the stories about Duke Darius were conflicting and yet all of them felt like the truth. Some tales made him out to be a heartless butcher, others told of a fair duke who was the epitome of justice to all. All the tales spoke of his handsome face and fabulous body. Even the most gruesome remarked on his strong sense of honor. Then again, there were also disturbing tales of his perversity, which Shae tried to ignore. He could not really prefer twelve year old girls to full grown women, at least she refused to believe that he did. She also would not consider the notion that he expected his women to have sex with each other. ...
