The champagne had been poured and we were going around the room telling what our resolutions were. My wife Bryn and I had come up with 'Adventure' for our theme for the year. Not necessarily going to native lands and hiking through them, but anything adventurous, anything we'd never done before.

Three days after the party we realized that every year we say our resolutions, toast to them, but never reach for them. It was going to be just another unfulfilled goal of ours, unless we jumped on it. We decided a quick start was the key to success.

So we instantly called my brother and sister-in-law and talked them into having our kids spend the night on Friday. That night was all ours to start our adventurous new year.

Now we had to come up with the event. Art galleries, Mongolian cuisine, sex somewhere in the mall, hiking in the dark, amateur poetry reading at a local book store, and cosmic bowling were all some of the adventures we toyed with. I finally picked up one of the many travel books I had and began thumbing through it for ideas. And one stuck out.
