We returned to the house and I sat through desert hardly touching my serving. My mom looked at me quizzically and wondered why I wasn't devouring the selection of cakes and cookies as I usually do on these occasions. Tonight, my mind was elsewhere.

Eleanor, however, was very smooth. She found a seat between a few of my other aunts and chatted away. She never even gave me a second look. I fidgeted for a while before finally excusing myself. I retired back in the den and waited for the party to break up. It finally did and my mother called me in to say good-bye to everyone. When Eleanor pulled on her jacket, she motioned to me.

"Going out to see friends tonight?" she asked casually, with no one listening.

"Um," I said, "I didn't have plans."

She lowered her eyes at me. "Devlin," she said, "You ARE going out tonight to see FRIENDS, right?"
