Tina had raised no objections when David, her husband, had suggested that he should come to stay with them for a few weeks while he searched for a house for himself and his family following his transfer to the West Country. Although Jerome was a good and long-term friend of her husband's and, although she had met him on a couple of occasions, she had not seen him for several years. She had, in fact, quite looked forward to seeing him again and, remembering that he was black but with a striking appearance and an athletic frame, recalled also that he had always been entertaining company.
