August 15th, 1941 - Los Angeles California

The month had started hot and stayed that way. Men and women slouched their way along the streets, dragging themselves to and from their jobs, trying in vain to find a spot of shade along the crowed sidewalk. Those of us sitting in traffic were no better off. In typical Los Angeles fashion the roads were jammed and cars moved at a crawl. I had both my windows rolled down trying to get some sort of breeze through the car, but all I got was dry, stale air and the sound of horns honking. I was glad when I finally pulled off the road into a parking space in front of the Carmine Building.

Four stories up the stairs (the elevators were out again) and I was dripping with sweat, but I somehow made it to my office. I went into the outer office, past the faded leather couch to the door with the frosted window and the word PRIVATE printed on it in fading gold letters.
