Leslie was curled up in an overstuffed chair close to the fire. The already tenuous light of the Winter day was creeping steadily toward darkness. Daniel looked across to where Leslie was staring into the fire, 'She sure could be a real beauty if she put a little effort into it,' he was thinking. The fire, producing the only source of light in the room, illuminated her pale features. They had been silent for several minutes.

Leslie's arrival had been a surprise. She had shown up on Daniel's doorstep that morning lugging an oversized backpack. "Mmm, it's always nice to be here," she gave him a playful squeeze and slipped out of his grasp. "I brought some food, are you hungry?"
