Pierce swallowed hard. His boss Gavin stood directly in line of sight with the computer screen. There was no way out, or any way to explain away the image on the screen. Pierce felt his mouth go dry. Pornography on company time and using their Internet connection was grounds for immediate dismissal. He wasn't exactly on company time since it was his lunch break. He was even using his own AOL account to log on. Not that he thought that would save him. Pierce only now realized what a stupid risk it was to open email he knew contained hardcore pictures from a newsgroup. He hadn't even finished his 90 days probation yet. That was still over 3 weeks off.

Gavin's square face remained expressionless, though his eyes flicked to the outer office door once and then back to the computer screen. A slight twitch moved one corner of his full lips. Pierce felt like all the moisture that had disappeared from his mouth's interior had rerouted to his sweat glands. He could feel a thread of hot liquid run down the back of his neck. Then there was the fact that his face felt tight and hot. He tried to keep his fear from his face, but his hazel eyes showed the true extent of his terror. Pierce swallowed again, trying to keep his throat from closing off.
