Part I

Major and Mrs. Stephen Jackson had been married 9 months. Major Stephen Jackson had enlisted in the North Carolina 3rd Militia shortly after the start of the War of Southern Independence. He has been away from his new bride Emily for almost 8 months now. He has written several times a week and his most recent letter was delivered in yesterday's post.

Emily Jackson continues to live on her family's large cotton plantation. As her darling Stephen prepared for war, it was decided that she should return to her parents to await the quick end of the war. She had grown up here and known no other home. The classic plantation home had wide porches on both levels that wrapped around the entire home. As with most southern homes, the home had several servants who cared for the needs of the family, providing the cooking, cleaning and other services as needed.

Emily awoke early in the morning, still distressed by the contents of Stephen's most recent letter.
