The office had been busy for the last three weeks. Finally, business had picked up for the summer. It was only a couple of weeks later than normal, but as the owner of the firm, I was starting to have my concerns. I had beefed up my staffing for the expected upturn. Now, they finally had something productive to do and I could afford to pay the extra help.

I was very fortunate over the past few years by being able to hire school teachers that were off for the summer. The first year I tried a couple of teachers I knew, and they suggested to several of their colleagues that this was the perfect summer employment. The office was very casual in both dress and time constraints. Each temporary employee knew their job duties and the time required to get the job completed. Since they were in customer service, they were on the phone and computer all day. I only asked that they wear clothing that wasn't distracting to other employees and I never had to suggest to an employee that an outfit wasn't appropriate. Again, the teachers I was able to hire knew what constituted appropriate dress.

Each Monday morning, we would have an employee breakfast and meeting to discuss problems they encountered or for suggestions to do their job better. These meetings usually took about an hour, but everyone agreed that they were very informative. On payday, I often would supply other goodies as well. Beer and wine and some finger food.
