Teresa's Woeful Wednesday by Devlin O'Neill

Teresa stamped snow off her boots onto the mat just inside the door to the History building and watched Uncle Devlin's face. He stared straight ahead as he untied the belt of his long leather coat and tapped his shoes to clear the slush. Her heart thumped like a jackhammer beneath her breasts.

Sometimes it was hard for Teresa to remember why she loved him so much, especially when he was so strict with her. He wasn't even her real uncle, but she had known him almost her whole life, and her father had married Devlin's little sister after her mother passed away. Felicitas wasn't even really like a step-mom, since she was barely ten years older than Teresa. They were more like friends, at least most of the time, and Devlin looked out for both of them after Teresa's dad died in the plane crash.

She shivered and ran a hand through her shoulder-length, light brown hair as he took her arm and led her to the lift. They rode in silence to the fourth floor, his strong arm around her shoulder. Teresa blinked bright green eyes and chewed a fingertip. She wanted to say something, ANYTHING, but he had his stern look on and the words caught in her throat.
