"Our Island"

The briny aroma of the sea brought back childhood memories as I stood on the bow of the ferry. It was a warm day in May, the week before Memorial Day, and the tree-covered island ahead of me grew larger as the ferry neared. I carried nothing with me but a worn army surplus rucksack that held a few changes of clothes and other miscellaneous items to help me get started.

My return to the island was a homecoming of sorts for me. As a child, my family spent most summers in an old cabin on the eastern seaward side of the island. The cabin had been in my family since my great-grandfather built it eighty years earlier. Some of my most cherished memories of youth were the hours spend playing on the beach or wandering in the forest behind the cabin.

"Welcome to Covington Island" the ferry captain said over the loudspeakers as the vessel slowly eased into the wharf. Below me, the giant bow doors swung open and cars drove onto the land. I was the passenger nearest to the gangplank and therefore was the first pedestrian to disembark. ...
