I was a very remote location, right smack in the middle of nowhere. Navajo Bridge was a most desolate place, and yet it's where my story begins, or just when it got interesting. I was supposed to be on my honeymoon, seeing the great American west, but the reality was that I got stood-up at the alter, and now I was taking a ‘pity trip' just so I wouldn't have to look anyone I knew in the eyes.Thinking back, it had been the most humiliating moment of my life. The crashing, sinking, devastating moment occurred at the rehearsal, the night before our wedding. The moment is frozen in them, when she announced in front of everyone, that she couldn't go through with it. I know it's a cliché, but she ran down the isle of the church and I never saw her again. Looking into the eyes of family and friends was the hardest part, the pity in their eyes stung, and it drained me dry.
I had prearranged all the details for our honeymoon, a trip to the Grand Canyon, with a deluxe cabin at Bright Angel Lodge. It was a three day drive, but that didn't matter, as we would be together, or so I thought. It was probably a bad idea, but I decided to take the trip anyway. My Mom begged me not to, my brother volunteered to go along, but in the end, I left alone, early in the morning while everyone was asleep. I couldn't look in their eye one more time.
