Audra in August - Part One

Darla lay on the sofa, annoyed with her anxiety and tension. It was late, well past midnight, but she couldn't bring herself to walk upstairs and go to bed...at least not until she knew she would be asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

It had been like this for her since August, three long months ago. Before then she had been an oblivious single mom, just going to work, raising her daughter, and spending weekends working on her dissertation that she would most likely never finish. There had been no real joys in her life, other than her wonderful daughter, but neither had there been complaints. She had simply lived.

And then August had arrived...and with it came Audra. Audra was from London, and was the foreign-exchange student that Cindy, Darla's daughter, had begged to host. Darla had resisted her daughter for most of May and June, but when the July deadline had approached, she gave in. Cindy had just seemed so excited about having a sister, however temporary, that Darla was unable to keep telling her no.

For the first couple of weeks Audra's presence was actually quite enjoyable, and Darla had begun to regret her earlier resistance. ...
