Mike lay on the bed, silent and listening intently for any noise from downstairs. He could hear the faint murmur of conversation and the occasional clink of crockery. Every so often the merry sound of Kate's laughter would drift up to him, accompanied by Lee's deeper chuckle. He wondered if they were talking about him. His arms ached slightly, but he was unable to gain any relief from the bonds that held them above his head, attached by his wrists to the headboard.
