Heat and humidity have driven us from the city. Three days of 30 plus temperatures and a moisture content that leaves everything sticky make living in the city almost unbearable.

We load the pickup truck, tossing what we think we need, and extra into the back. Coolers filled with ice, food and drinks, sleeping bags, and assorted camping gear are scattered hurriedly in the bed and we depart. Driving to the mountains an hour away is like escaping a furnace. Distance and altitude increase and the temperatures and discomfort decrease.

Soon, we are out of the endless suburbs, driving under shady trees. Our attitude improves with out altitude. The snappishness of the past few days is replaced by a sense of escape and euphoria. The difference in the air is tangible.

The truck cab is filled with cool breezes as we head upward, now on a less-traveled road, little traffic in evidence. We are heading to a camping spot not well-known to many, a bit off the regular path, but worth the effort. You have been sitting quietly, watching the scenery, when you turn to me, a quizzical look on your face. I glance to you, wondering and see a mischievous smile light your face. Quickly surveying traffic, you slip from the shoulder restraint of your seatbelt and bend, leaning over to my side of the truck.
