The depths of winter, Mid-February, with more months of cold and snow still to come. Two meters of snow blanket the ground to either side of the road, the banking are half again as high, dirty, hard blocks tumbling into the cleaner covering.

We have made the drive to the summer cottage, unvisited since before the first snow. Concern for the snow load on the roof and windows on the lakeside of the house.

I pull the truck over, out of the way of what few vehicles might travel this back road. The turn off to our road is unplowed, the banking over our head. Old tire tracks tell us there is little traffic here.

Unloading the truck takes a few minutes, we stack needed supplies on a sled tossed over the banking and clamber after it, donning snowshoes. You pace yourself in front, breaking trail first, sinking into the powder covering the wide snowshoes and dropping it off with each step. The sky is a deep blue, no clouds and the sun is almost blinding off the snow. The air is crisp enough to make breathing in through the nose painful and exhalation freezes on my beard and mustache.

The road for the two-kilometer length to the cottage is flat and straight, hung over with the bare branches of Beech and Maple. Crows noisily escort us, pausing on branches to watch our passing, eyeing the sled behind me on its length of rope, hoping for something to fall off ...
