A True Story

I had just turned twenty- one in October of the previous year and decided that I would have the open-heart surgery the Doctor recommended. I had been diagnosed with a heart condition when I was in junior high school. My only limitation was no strenuous sport activity. When I was nineteen they catheterized my heart and found I had a hole about the size of a quarter between the upper chambers. This was in 1963 when heart surgery was relatively new. I waited until I was 21 so I could sign the consent myself and, if anything happened, no one would go on a guilt trip.

Arrived at the hospital and was put in a ward with two other guys. We introduced ourselves and got along great. Back then you went into the hospital one day; the next day was for test and then the next day the surgery. On the second day I had to go to the lab for blood test and then x-rays and a bunch of other test. I was laying in my bed having a cigarette when a guy comes over with a table with all kinds of gear on it. He said, "Are you Gary" I said, "Yes, what do you need? Blood, urine, or what". He laughed and said, "No I'm here to give you a shave." I looked at him with surprise and said, "I just shaved this morning." He said, No I need to shave you for surgery." I looked at him with a dumb look on my face and he told me he had to shave me from ...
