Karen and I had gone to high school together, and though we had hung around with the same crowd of people, we had never dated. We were very good friends, who enjoyed each other's company, and I felt that I could talk with her about virtually anything, including any problems I might have with whoever my current girlfriend was. Karen would talk to me about her woes with her boyfriend, and I would try to give her as good advice as I could. Being a teenager, how good that advice was is now questionable, but I tried.

We graduated from high school, and went off to college, she at one school, and me at another. We kept in contact, writing back and forth, even calling each other on occasion. At the start of our junior year, Karen transferred to the same school I was going to, primarily for financial reasons. We continued our friendship, still not dating, until we were into our senior year.

I had never been able to establish a long term relationship with any of my girlfriends, and Karen seemed to do the same, dating one boy for a couple of months, then breaking it off and dating someone else. As far as I knew, she hadn't been sleeping with any of them; as for me, I slept with one or two girls, but I, like Karen, simply couldn't seem to make things click for more than a month or two.
