A First Time For Everything

Michael looked at his watch as he backed out of the garage. Six o'clock exactly. He was supposed to be picking her up right now. Madeline had no patience for tardiness. He was going to hear about this. But, damn it, he didn't even want to go in the first place.

He thought again, irritably, about the phone call from Maddie that afternoon. There was a birthday party for someone she worked with and she wanted to go. More than that, she wanted Michael to go. He didn't know most of the people she worked with. He had met them, of course, but other than drinks one evening with a woman named Laurie, they hadn't socialized with her co-workers at all. She had reminded him this afternoon of the countless times she had attended functions with him to impress the "right" people.

So, he showered and changed into something he hoped was casual enough and grabbed the clothes that Maddie wanted to change into. She was waiting for him at Laurie's house, having decided to go home with Laurie and change there so the three of them could ride to the party together.
