The sample of plain dirt was shoveled from the field behind the lab. A petri dish properly prepared with the correct ingredients for a fine meal to feed whatever bacteria have chosen this particular clump of dirt to make their home.

"I wonder what we will grow today?" Josh Anderson the chief microbiologist asked his assistant Michelle Adams.

"You never can tell, that is what makes this so exciting work," she replied in her cheerleaderish voice. Sometimes she could get on your nerves but she was a good assistant and really was interested in doing a good job.

"Okay, I think this is ready for the oven." The oven was a small container in which the samples were placed to assure a warm even temperature and a controlled humidity to allow things to grow. It was hopeful that some important antibiotic would eventually be distilled from some exotic species of bacteria from ordinary soil. The old antibiotics no longer seem to work as well as they once did. It is time for a new batch, but so far the samples have provided only colorful specimens of various bacteria of no particular value.
