She stood on the deck of the steamer, staring at Nome for the first time. Katherine had just turned twenty. She was reasonably attractive; tall; thin except for the outsized chest; shoulder-length blonde hair, now softly whipping her face in the Bering Sea breeze.

Glancing to her left, she noticed her husband leaning on the rail, talking with another traveler. They married only two weeks before leaving home. She hadn't known him very well; he was a drinking companion of her father's. When her father informed her the man had asked for her hand, she rushed to her loft, tears streaming. He was at least twenty years older, not matching the vision of a perfect marriage she had dreamed of since puberty.

Her mother came to the loft, sat beside her on the bed Katherine shared with her sister, then gently reminded her the family was very poor. At least this man could provide for and take care of her. That was more than most local women got.

After the wedding, Jake informed her they were going to Alaska to start new lives. He explained that, although not wealthy, he had enough for steamer passage for two, with some left over until they found work. At first she had serious reservations, moving so far from her family in North Dakota. But she had little to look forward to in the small farming community.
