Since Lisa had declined to accompany her husband, Michael, on his posting to Afghanistan (for obvious reasons) she and Gordon had become an item. They had been clandestine lovers for a number of years but now, in the absence of Michael, they spent most nights together. The result was that they became like an old married couple.
